Wig Cap Sizes Explained: How to Measure Your Head for the Right Fit

Wig Cap Sizes Explained: How to Measure Your Head for the Right Fit - Tallie Wigs | Sheitels.com

The right wig starts with the right fit. A cap that is too small pinches and lifts at the nape; one that is too large slides and shows its edges. Before you fall in love with a length or a color, it helps to know your cap size. Here is how to measure your head at home, what the common cap sizes mean, and how we make sure every piece fits you exactly.

How to Measure Your Head for a Wig

You only need a soft tape measure and a mirror. Pull your own hair back as flat as you can, then take these three measurements:

  • Circumference. Measure all the way around your head, starting at your front hairline, around above the ears, around the nape, and back to the start. This is the single most important number.
  • Front to nape. Measure from your front hairline straight over the top of your head to the base of your skull at the back.
  • Ear to ear. Measure across the top of your head from the top of one ear to the top of the other.

Write the three numbers down. Circumference alone will point you to a cap size, and the other two help confirm the shape is right for your head.

Understanding Wig Cap Sizes

Most wigs are built to one of a few standard cap sizes, measured by circumference. These are general ranges, and they vary slightly by maker:

  • Petite or small. Roughly 20.5 to 21.5 inches around. Best for smaller head shapes, where a standard cap would slip.
  • Average or medium. Roughly 21.5 to 22.5 inches. This fits the majority of wearers and is the most common size.
  • Large. Roughly 22.5 to 23.5 inches and up. Built for fuller head sizes so nothing pinches and the wig sits securely all day.

If you measure at the upper end of average, a large cap human hair wig is often the more comfortable choice, especially for all-day wear. A cap that fits well is the difference between a wig you tolerate and one you forget you are wearing.

Why Fit Matters Even More With Human Hair

A human hair wig is an investment, and its fit affects both comfort and how natural it looks. A well-fitted cap keeps the hairline sitting flat against your skin, so a lace top or silk top can disappear into the scalp the way it is meant to. Too loose, and even the finest lace will lift and reveal its edge. This matters most for daily wear and for anyone wearing a wig through medical hair loss, where security and comfort are everything.
