Thinking of Donating or Tossing Your Wig? Here’s a Better Alternative!
Share
Many people search for where to donate used wigs, how to dispose of old wigs, or what to do with unwanted wigs. Donation is generous, but not all wigs qualify, and throwing one away is often a waste. There is a smarter option: repurposing your wig into a hat fall.
If your wig is worn out, outdated, thinning, or no longer fits your needs, consider restoration, repair, or a hat fall conversion at Tallie Wigs instead of giving it away or tossing it.
Before You Donate or Trash It
Most charities that accept wig donations for cancer patients have strict requirements. They usually only take wigs that are:
- Nearly new or gently used, with minimal wear
- Easily adjusted and restyled
- Made from human hair (many synthetic wigs are not accepted)
If your wig has frizz, thinning sections, lace damage, or product buildup, it may not meet donation standards. Sometimes a proper wash brings a wig back further than you would expect; our guide to washing and caring for a human hair wig walks you through it. And throwing it away means losing your investment, when many wigs can be restored or repurposed into something more useful.
Option 1: Convert Your Wig Into a Hat Fall
A hat fall is a modified wig without the bulky top, designed to be worn under hats for a lighter, more breathable fit.
- More breathable and comfortable than a full wig
- Perfect for casual wear, travel, or everyday use
- Saves money by repurposing a wig you already own
- A natural, easy-to-wear alternative to full wigs

Option 2: Repair It Instead of Replacing It
If your wig is damaged but still wearable, a repair can bring it back to life. Common repairs include:
- Lace front restoration for ripped or fraying lace
- Filling in thinning or worn sections
- Tightening loose wefts to restore structure
- General maintenance to improve longevity

I have two natural hair wigs, Ellen wille, that my daughter has used. They are in rough shape but I would like someone to be able to use them as a hat fall. My daughter will not wear hats. Could they be shipped to you to see if you can use them?
