Virtual Wig Try-On Apps vs a Real Video Fitting: What Each Can Tell You

The Truth About Virtual Wig Try-Ons: Apps vs. Expert Consultations - Tallie Wigs | Sheitels.com

Search for "virtual wig try on" and you will find two very different things under the same name. One is an app or filter that lays a picture of a wig over your selfie. The other is a live video fitting with a wig specialist who measures, matches and plans a real human hair wig with you. Both are useful. They just answer different questions, and knowing which question you are asking saves time and money.

What a try-on app actually does

A try-on app uses your phone camera and augmented reality, or a flat photo overlay, to place a wig image on your head. It is fast, free and private, and it is genuinely good for a few things:

  • Exploring length. Seeing yourself with shoulder-length hair versus long layers can settle a question in seconds.
  • Rough color direction. Warm or cool, darker or lighter, as a first impression.
  • Playing with ideas. Bangs, a side part or a dramatic change you are not sure about.

What an app cannot tell you

The overlay sits on top of your photo. It has no idea what is under it.

  • Fit. An app cannot measure your head, so it cannot tell you cap size, how the wig will sit at the nape, or whether it will feel secure all day.
  • Hairline. Whether a hairline looks real depends on lace, knotting and density at the front. A filter draws a clean edge that no real wig has.
  • Hair quality. It cannot show the difference between virgin human hair and processed hair, or how either moves, shines and ages.
  • Cap construction. Lace top versus silk top, hand-tied versus machine wefted: these decide comfort and realism, and they are invisible in an overlay.
  • Medical needs. After chemotherapy, with alopecia or with trichotillomania, the scalp can be sensitive and the hair loss pattern matters. An app cannot plan around that.

What a real video fitting does instead

A video fitting is a live call with a person, not a filter. At our shop it works like this:

  1. We talk through your hair loss and your goals. Medical needs come first.
  2. We measure together. We guide you through a few head measurements with a soft tape.
  3. We match color in real light. You hold up your own hair or old photos by a window.
  4. We plan the cap, length and density. You get a clear recommendation for the human hair wig that fits your life.

In the United States the wig is then shipped to you to see in your own mirror, with time to decide. Outside the US we ship once, with an extra video session before we build and remote help afterwards. You can read how it works by region on our where we serve page.

Which one do you need?

Use an app if you are still dreaming: you want to see yourself with different lengths or colors before you talk to anyone. Use a video fitting when you are ready to choose a real human hair wig, especially if the reason is medical. Many people do both, in that order: play with an app for ideas, then bring screenshots to the fitting.

A few questions people ask

Can a try-on app replace a fitting? For fun or first ideas, yes. For a wig you will wear every day, no, because fit and hairline cannot be judged from an overlay.

Do I need special equipment for a video fitting? A phone or laptop, good daylight and a soft measuring tape. We use Google Meet, and also FaceTime, WhatsApp video or Zoom.

Is a video fitting only for people far from Los Angeles? No. Local clients use it too when they cannot get away, for example during treatment.

Does a medical wig need special paperwork? If you plan to ask your insurer about a wig, see our guide to medical wig insurance. We cannot promise coverage.
