If your treatment plan includes chemotherapy that causes hair loss, one of the kindest things you can do for yourself is plan your wig early. Here is what we tell clients at our Los Angeles shop.
The Best Time Is Before Hair Loss Begins
Come in soon after your treatment plan is set. While you still have your hair, we can match your natural color, texture, part, and hairline, so your human hair wig looks like you. Custom pieces are ready in approximately 1 to 5 business days, so even a short window is enough.
When Hair Loss Usually Starts
Many people notice shedding within a few weeks of their first treatment, but timing varies by medication and dose. Ask your oncology team what to expect for your regimen.
Bring These to Your Consultation
- Photos of your hair styled the way you like it
- Your treatment start date
- A prescription for a "cranial prosthesis" if you plan to use insurance, FSA, or HSA
- A friend or family member, if you like
The Week Hair Starts to Fall
- Many clients choose to cut their hair short, or shave, before shedding gets heavy. We can do this privately at the shop.
- Use a soft pillowcase and a gentle, loose sleep cap.
- Start wearing your wig so it feels familiar before you need it every day.
Comfort During Treatment
The scalp can feel tender. Soft liners, breathable caps, and an adjustable fit make a difference. We set this up at your fitting.
Paying for Your Wig
Many plans reimburse a cranial prosthesis. We provide a superbill with HCPCS code A9282, or L8499, only if your insurer asks for it. Read cranial prosthesis and insurance. Human hair wigs start at $3,000.
