Wig tags love three words: Remy, virgin and European. They are often printed side by side, as if they were three levels of the same thing. They are not. Each one answers a different question about the hair, and a wig can be one, two, all three or none. Once you know what each word really promises, a label stops being marketing and starts being information.
Three Words, Three Different Questions
| Term | The question it answers | What it does not tell you |
|---|---|---|
| Remy | How was the hair collected? (cuticles aligned in one direction) | Where it grew, or whether it was dyed or chemically treated |
| Virgin | Has it ever been chemically altered? (never bleached, dyed or permed) | Where it grew, or whether it was collected Remy |
| European | Where did it grow? (Europe, often Eastern Europe) | How it was collected or whether it was processed |
Keep that table in mind and most confusing labels become clear.
What Remy Hair Means
A Remy hair wig is made from hair that was cut from the donor in a ponytail or braid and kept in that orientation, so every cuticle points from root to tip. Think of the cuticle as tiny overlapping scales, like roof tiles. When all the tiles face the same way, strands slide past each other. When some face up and some face down, they grab and knot.
Is Remy human hair good? It is a real step up from non-Remy hair, which is gathered loose, mixed in direction, and then usually acid-treated to remove the cuticle so it will not mat. But Remy on its own says nothing about color treatment. Plenty of Remy hair has been bleached and dyed to reach a fashionable shade, and that includes many Remy wigs and Remy hair toppers sold online. Cuticle intact Remy hair is the version you want: aligned and still protected.
What Virgin Hair Means
Virgin hair has never been chemically processed. No bleach, no permanent dye, no perm, no acid bath. Is virgin hair the same as human hair? All virgin hair is human hair, but most human hair is not virgin. Is 100 virgin hair human hair? Yes, and if the label is honest, it is the least altered human hair you can buy.
Because nothing has been stripped, virgin hair keeps its natural cuticle, strength and elasticity. It can be colored for the first time by a skilled colorist and still stay healthy. In practice, the finest virgin hair is also collected Remy, which is why you will see virgin Remy hair wigs at the top of most ranges. You may also see the term raw hair, and searches for raw hair vs virgin hair are common. In the bundle market raw usually means unprocessed hair from a single donor, but the word is used loosely, so ask what it means for the piece in front of you. Our virgin vs processed hair guide covers how each grade ages over time.
What European Hair Means
European is an origin. It tells you the hair grew on women in Europe, most often Eastern Europe, including the Slavic countries. European hair is valued because it is naturally fine and comes in lighter shades than most of the world's hair supply, so it often needs little or no lightening to match a client. Our guide What Is Slavic Hair? explains the finest part of this group.
What European does not promise is grade. European hair can still be non-Remy or processed. That is why the best European Remy hair wigs, and above them virgin European pieces, say all of the words, and the shop can explain each one.
European Hair vs Remy: Not Really a Contest
People search European hair vs Remy as if they were rivals. They overlap. European is where the hair came from; Remy is how it was handled. The comparison that matters is European Remy against Remy hair from another origin, and that brings us to the most common one.
Indian vs European Hair
India is one of the largest sources of human hair in the world, much of it offered at temples where devotees shave their heads. Indian hair wigs, and Indian Remy hair wigs in particular, are widely available, and good Indian Remy hair is genuine, cuticle-aligned human hair. Here is how it typically compares with European hair:
- Thickness. Indian hair is usually medium in diameter. European hair is finer, which reads more natural at a part and on a lace top.
- Natural color. Indian hair is naturally dark brown to black. To reach light brown, blonde or ash shades, it must be lightened, which raises the cuticle and shortens its life. European hair already comes in many of those shades.
- Texture. Indian hair often has a natural wave and plenty of body. European hair is softer and silkier, straight to gently wavy.
- Processing in the mass market. Much of the Indian hair sold as wigs is bulk-collected, chemically lightened, re-textured and coated with silicone for shine. When that coating washes out, the hair can dull and tangle.
So in the Indian Remy vs European comparison, both can be real Remy hair, but European is finer and needs less chemistry for most of the women we fit. For darker coloring and a fuller feel, good Indian Remy hair can be a fair choice. For a lighter, finer, more personal match, European is the standard.
Russian Hair vs Indian Hair
The same logic applies with even more contrast. Russian hair is among the finest and softest European hair, with natural light and medium shades. Indian hair is thicker and darker. What is Russian Remy hair? Simply Russian hair collected with the cuticles aligned, which is how the best Russian hair is always gathered. We explain more on our European human hair wigs page.
What Double Drawn Means
One more word appears beside Remy on many tags. A double drawn wig is made from hair that has been sorted twice so that most shorter strands are removed, leaving the ends nearly as full as the roots. It describes fullness at the ends, not origin or grade. Double drawn hair can be virgin or processed, so ask the same questions as for any other label.
How to Read a Wig Label, in Practice
- 100% human hair tells you only that it is not a fiber blend.
- Remy tells you the cuticles are aligned. Ask whether it has been colored.
- Virgin tells you it has never been chemically treated. Ask where it grew. The same applies to unprocessed human hair wigs, which is another name for the same grade.
- European, Slavic or Russian tells you the origin. Ask whether it is Remy and virgin.
- Silky, glossy shine straight out of the box can mean silicone. Ask how the hair looks after washing.
A good shop will answer all of these without hesitation. If the answers are vague, the label probably is too.
