The day you see the first soft hair come back is a big one. It is also the start of a new set of questions. Do I keep wearing my wig? Will it still fit? When can I go out without it?

This is what we have learned from fitting human hair wigs for women before, during and after treatment. It is practical guidance, not medical advice. Your oncology team knows your treatment, so check with them about timing and anything you put on your scalp.

What Regrowth Often Looks Like

For many people, hair starts to come back within a few weeks to a few months after treatment ends. The first growth is often fine and soft. It can return with a different texture or color for a while, such as curlier, straighter, darker or more gray than before. Many women find it settles over the following months, but everyone is different.

Brows and lashes may come back on their own schedule too.

Wearing Your Wig Over New Growth

Most women keep wearing their wig for some time after regrowth starts. Short new hair is uneven, and a wig gives you a finished look while it fills in.

  • Check the fit. As your hair comes back, your wig can start to feel snug or sit higher than it did on a bare scalp. A cap can usually be adjusted, so you do not need a new wig just because your own hair is growing. See what happens at a medical wig fitting.
  • Use a thin liner. A soft liner keeps short hair flat and stops it from catching on the cap.
  • Skip glue and tape. New growth and a recovering scalp do better with a fitted cap and adjustable straps.
  • Give your own hair air. Take the wig off at home when you can.

The In-Between Stage: Toppers and Shorter Styles

When your own hair is a few inches long but still thin on top, a full wig may feel like more than you need. A human hair topper covers the crown and part line and lets your own hair show at the sides and back. Many women use a topper as a bridge between a full wig and no wig at all.

Some clients also ask us to cut their wig shorter during this stage, so the change to their own short hair looks gradual to the people around them.

Caring for New Hair

New hair can be fragile. General tips our clients find helpful:

  • Wash gently with lukewarm water and a mild shampoo your care team is comfortable with.
  • Go easy on heat tools and tight hair ties.
  • Ask your oncology team before coloring, perming or relaxing new growth. Many people are advised to wait.
  • Protect your scalp from sun with a hat, scarf or your wig.

When to Stop Wearing Your Wig

There is no right date. Some women stop as soon as they have a short, even crop. Others wear their wig for months longer, for work, for photos or simply because they like it. You can also switch back and forth: wig for an event, your own hair on weekends.

A good human hair wig keeps its value after treatment. Many clients keep theirs for special occasions, travel, or a day when they want long hair again.

If You Are Still Planning Ahead
